Colombian singer Shakira was attacked by a sea lion in Cape Town Sunday while attempting to pet the wild creature.

Shakira’s South African vacation nearly came to an end when the singer and her brother got too close to the animal. Shakira reportedly saw a group of sea lions and thought she would approach them because they were “cute.” The singer approached one of the sea lions, attempted to pet it and snapped pictures with her Blackberry.

“Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me,” Shakira wrote on her Facebook.

Fortunately, Shakira’s brother jumped over and managed to push the singer away to safety. Besides minor scratches, Shakira was not hurt.

So, how could such a cute sea creature take on these vicious actions?

Shakira later tweeted that the sea lion confused her glistening Blackberry for prey and felt he was being teased when she held up her phone to capture the moment.
