It was a weekend of homecomings.
Houston native Beyonce packed Minute Maid for a lovely night of throwbacks and hit singles at the ballpark on Friday – with husband Jay Z bringing his lyrical genius and countless killer tracks along, of course – and G.O.O.D. music signee Travi$ Scott (also from Houston) invaded Bayou Music Center in full fury the night before with White Arrows and The Neighbourhood.
White Arrows was the show-starter of the evening. The Los Angeles band kicked things off on a high note with their dreamy-pop songs and thumping beats. “This song is about being a who*e,” lead singer Mickey Schiff introduced the opening track. The psych-pop group performed and handful of songs, including “Get Gone”, “Coming Or Going”, “I Can Go”, “Roll Forever”, and “Fireworks Of The Sea”, a select from their debut record Dry Land Is Not A Myth. They even tried out a couple of new songs from their upcoming sophomore album In Bardo.
Travi$ Scott followed White Arrows’ performance with force. The 22-year-old rapper stomped onto the stage, immediately warning all bi-standers that he came rage. And that’s exactly what he did, with legions of crowd-surfing fans adding to the chaos. It’s no wonder The Neighbourhood hand-picked the guy to open for them on tour. The band obviously wanted something wild – and that’s what they got. A riotous 30-minute set from Travi$ Scott, featuring guest appearances from Kirko Bangz – who came and delivered his break-out single “Young & Gettin’ It” – and Jesse Rutherford – who randomly appeared from backstage and flew into the crowd before The Neighbourhood’s scheduled set.
Continuing the string of high-energy performances, The Neighbourhood turned the house upside down (much like their logo). The California rock band has only released one full length record since their launch in 2011, but has still managed to make huge waves with singles like “Sweater Weather” and “Honest.” They delivered flawless live versions of those and other popular songs like “Afraid”, “Female Robbery”, “Let It Go”, and “Everybody’s Watching Me”.
