It seems like Europeans will have to “hop the pond” if they plan on seeing some of their favorite artists in a festival environment in 2012. It was announced today that two of Europe’s biggest rock festivals, Oxegen in Ireland and Glastonbury in England, have been cancelled for 2012.
Glastonbury‘s website simply reads, “There is no festival in 2012. Glastonbury 2013 opens on Wed June 26th 2013.”
The promoter’s for Oxegen have issued the following statement:
“Oxygen like Glastonbury is taking a year off in 2012 and will be back July 2013. Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas & peaceful New Year. Keep rockin’ in 2012 and we will see you in 2013.”
While this is not the first time Glastonbury has taken a break, it is a first for Oxegen. What originally started as a Glastonbury tradition to take a break every fifth year seems to be spreading to Oxegen.
Both festivals are two of Europe’s biggest with over 60,000 people a day visiting Oxegen and 150,000 attending Glastonbury.
2011 saw Coldplay and Beyonce headlining both festivals. The Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys and The Black Eyed Peas round out the headliners for Oxegen, while U2 performed at Glastonbury.
Glastonbury 2013 will begin June 26, 2013 near Pilton, Somerset, England.
Oxegen 2013 is expected to take place July 2013 at the Punchestown Racecourse in County Kildare, Ireland.
