Record sales aren’t what they used to be, even if you’re the Queen of Pop. Madonna’s latest album MDNA has just been certified Gold after being on sale for over 7 months.
MDNA sold a respectable 350,000 copies in its first week when it went on sale March 23, 2012. After week one sales dropped by over 85 percent, the largest recorded drop for any artist since SoundScan was implemented in 1991. Since then sales for Madonna’s 12th studio album have almost screeched to a halt.
Although MDNA is her 20th Gold album, her recent sales are nothing compared to her 1983-1989 heyday when she sold over 71 million albums in seven years. It’s not only Madonna’s album sales that have been lackluster. MDNA produced only one Top 10 single “Give Me All Your Luvin” while neither of the two follow ups even broke into the Hot 100.
Is it time for Madonna to hang up her coat and call it quits? You be the judge.
