Good news for all the Lauryn Hill fans out there! The Grammy Award-winning singer was released from prison Friday morning (Oct. 4). Yippee! The “Killing Me Softly” singer began serving a three-month prison sentence in a Connecticut prison back in July after pleading guilty for failing to pay about $1 million in taxes over the past decade, but now the South Orange, N.J. resident is enjoying freedom outside of prison walls.
Marking the occasion, Hill released a new song titled “Consumerism,” late Thursday evening (Oct. 3), the day before her discharge from prison. Check out the new Lauryn Hill track below, but be cautious! “Consumerism” strays far from the typical Lauryn Hill/Fugees-vibed tune. Consider the track more of an intense spoken word piece, filled with aggression and thought-provoking lyrics. Doesn’t sound like Hill at all, right? Well, expect the unexpected and brace yourself as Hill raps rapidly over chaotic rhythm, targeting “corporate greed in Jesus’ name,” “decrying ageism, sexism, racism, fascism, “compromised commercialism,” and “neo-McCarthyism,” knocking each of the identified issues down one-by-one. In a statement released with the song, Hill said she “felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm.”
On a brighter note, Hill recently inked a deal with Sony and a new record is reportedly in the works.
