Lady Gaga and Katy Perry Singles Could Make Digital Chart History This Week

Digital history may be in the making as we encounter the great pop battle between Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.

Lady Gaga’s “Applause” and Katy Perry’s “Roar” are the newest single from these two pop goddesses, and they are ready to compete head on for big debuts on Billboard’s Digital Songs chart next week.  Analyst predict that each single will sell over 400,000 downloads by the end of the tracking week for Billboard.

Perry’s new single “Roar” digitally released on Monday, August 12th while Gaga’s “Applause”  released today (3th).  Gaga’s release is six days prior to her original release date of August 19th.  Even though a prediction of +400,000 downloads are being made for the two singers debuts, industry sources say a start of over 500,000 sales for each wouldn’t be out of the question either.

If both singers sell over 400,000 downloads, it would be the first time two songs have debuted in the same week with more than 400,000 in over a year. The last time this occurred was back in 2012 when Maroon 5’s “Payphone” debuted at No. 1 (493,000) on May 5th, pushing Gotye’s hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” down one slot to No. 2 (463,000) on the digital songs chart.

The end of the tracking week will be on Sunday, August 18th and final sales tally for both debuts will be released on the morning of Wednesday, August 21st.

Both singles are previews for a new studio album from both singers. Katy Perry’s new album Prism is due for release on October 22nd while Lady Gaga’s new album ArtPop releases on November 11th.
