Katy Perry Becomes Top Digital Artist of All Time
On Wednesday, June 25, Katy Perry was presented with yet another award. The pop superstar was crowned RIAA Gold & Platinum Program’s top digital artist of all time! Since the release of her breakout hit “I Kissed A Girl” in 2008, the “Birthday” singer has managed to sell a whopping 72 million digital singles, including downloads and on-demand streams. That’s 20 million more than any other artist! In fact, Katy Perry is the first artist to ever pass the 70 million mark.
“Katy Perry is a force to be reckoned with in music,” said RIAA Chairman & CEO Cary Sherman. “We are honored to recognize Katy as the most successful digital artist in Gold & Platinum Program history. She embodies all that makes a true global superstar: the musical talent, the extraordinary drive and genuine charisma, and an intrinsic connection with her fans. This award is a reflection of her deep commitment to those qualities and to her music, which has propelled her to this historic milestone. We congratulate Katy and her team on all her success.”
Perry’s honor of top-selling artist is completely unsurprising. Since the launch of her music career, the “Dark Horse” singer has been overwhelmed with unyielding success. She has earned a 9x multi-Platinum certification for “Firework,” scored 7x multi-Platinums for both “California Girls” and “E.T.,” earned 6x multi-Platinums for “Dark Horse,” “Hot N Cold,” and “Teenage Dream,” and the list drags on. In the entire stretch of her three-album career, Katy Perry has had 18 hit songs! Her debut album One of the Boys, which was released in 2008, was certified Platinum and it’s follow-up Teenage Dream has been certified double-Platinum.
With all of her record-breaking and award-winning, Katy Perry is tough to compete with. Rihanna and Taylor Swift trail far behind on the Digital Singles chart with 52 and 51 million certifications, respectively.
Katy Perry is currently touring behind her 2013 album Prism.
