Elton John has been itching to record a hip-hop album for many years. Back in 2006, Elton told Rolling Stone magazine he wanted to incorporate hip-hop into his music, but with his newest album The Diving Board standing far from anything urban, a hip-hop record remains on the singer’s to-do list.
In a recent interview, Elton confirmed that he would still love to make a hip-hop album.
“I just don’t know how to do it,” he said. “I might do a couple of tracks with Pharrell.”
While Elton and Pharrell hooking up in the studio sounds like a master plan, let’s just hope those plans fall through. Elton once had recording time booked with Eminem, back in 2006, but he had the misfortune of landing in Detroit for the session on the same day that Em’s best friend and mentor Proof passed away.
Hip-hop heavyweight Kanye West sampled Elton’s hit “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” on his 2007 song “Good Morning,” and even more recently called him to play piano and sing on his 2010 smash “All of the Lights,” so Elton definitely has a home in the hip-hop genre.
It’s time for Elton John to act on his love of the genre and make a record.
