Disney Investigating DeadMau5 Trademark Registration

The Walt Disney Company informed the US Trademark Office on Friday that they are investigating a trademark registration filed by Canadian EDM producer Deadmau5.

Deadmau5, better known as Joel Zimmerman, applied for a trademark, via Ronica Holdings Limited, consisting of a caricature of a mouse head with black ears, white eyes, black face, and white mouth. The registration would cover classes such as BMX bikes, vehicles, electronic and scientific apparatus, paper gods, leather goods, stable foods such as coffee, beverages, entertainment services, toys and sporting goods.

Due to the fact Deadmau5’s trademark bears resemblance to the Mickey Mouse character, Disney lawyers may potentially argue that Zimmerman’s trademark will confuse and mislead consumers as to what the true source the goods and services originated from.

Disney has requested and been granted a 90 day period to investigate the claim and file a notice of official opposition against the Deadmau5 logo.
