David Crosby Returns to Music After 20-Year Hiatus

It has been 20 years since the release of his last solo album Thousand Roads, but David Crosby is finally returning to the music scene with a new album titled Croz, out January 28th.

“I spent a lot of that time working with Crosby, Stills and Nashthese past two decades,” says Crosby. “But I wanted to challenge myself and work outside the group. Also, I do things differently than they do and a couple years ago, I just started writing like crazy. I’m so happy that I did.”

Croz is the first album by Crosby to be co-written and co-produced by his son, pianist-arranger James Raymond. Crosby worked on the album for over two years, recording it at Jackson Browne’s Santa Monica studio, as well as at his son’s home studio.

“These songs are all over the map,” Crosby said about his album. “If there is a unifying theme, it’s that they’re all about human beings. When you get to the end of the album, you’ve really gone on an emotional voyage.”

A few special guests appear on the album. Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis plays on the track “Holding On to Nothing.” British guitarist Mark Knopfler is also featured, playing on the first track “What’s Broken.” Knopfler normally does not record for other artists’ albums, but for Crosby he made an exception.

“That was a real piece of generosity on his part,” Crosby remarked. “His manager said he usually doesn’t record with people, but he might if I send [to] him. I sent him the song and he just called it.”

Crosby is also heading back out on tour. Crosby’s six-city solo tour to promote the new album began late last week. That tour concludes in February, when he will then head out on the road with Crosby, Stills and Nash for a 13-date tour in the U.S.
