Carrie Underwood Announces New Album and Single

Carrie Underwood announced today during a special Facebook Q&A that she has a new single titled “Smoke Break,” which has already been released to radio. The song is the first single off of her fifth studio album Storyteller, which will hit stores October 23rd.

Underwood revealed that she co-wrote “Smoke Break” with some of her frequent collaborators, Hillary Lindsey and Chris DeStefano. Jay Joyce, who has worked with Little Big Town and Eric Church, produced the tune, marking the first time he and Underwood have worked together. The song, which discusses the need to escape the stress of life, will be available for purchase digitally on Friday.

Underwood also released some details about the album during the Q&A session:

What is the main inspiration for this album? The driving force behind it?
“I feel like a lot of the songs that I wrote and gravitated to ended up being more traditional and “twangy” than anything I have ever done before. I just went with it! I love the story telling aspect of Country music…it’s one of the reasons I always wanted to be a part of it.”

How did you come with song “Smoke Break”?
We were writing and kept taking breaks to go outside because we were getting a little stuck on a song we were already working on. It was so beautiful outside, that we had a hard time focusing so we decided to write a song about taking breaks! “Smoke Break” seemed like a great title, so we ran with it!

Is [the new album] similar to any of your previous albums or is it completely different?
I think it definitely has it’s own sound and feel, but I hope I kept all of the things that people have enjoyed about my music to date. I just wanted to keep growing as a songwriter and as an artist. It’s very exciting! And, obviously, I stick to a lot of what I love about Country music…which is story telling!

Underwood also mentioned Storyteller has six songs co-written by her as well as one song about her son Isaiah, who was born earlier this year.
