Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” may be one one of the hottest songs of 2015 but they surprisingly didn’t make as much money from the song as you’d think, Billboard revealed.
That’s because the song is credited to so many songwriters. The song was penned Mars, Ronson, Jeffrey Bhasker, Philip Lawrence, Devon Gallaspy and Trinidad James. Back in April, Lonnie Simmons, Ronnie Wilson, Charles Wilson, Robert Wilson and Rudolph Taylor, who wrote the Gap Band’s 1979 hit “Oops Up Side Your Head,” were also added to the list of songwriters due to a settlement reached after the song was found to be similar to “Uptown Funk.”
Billboard estimates that the song has earned $2.7 million in publishing royalties (which does not include television and film synch revenues) and $1.9 million of that amount was distributed among the eleven songwriters.
