Astroworld Death Toll Reaches 9

The death toll from the Astroworld Festival crowd surge rose to nine Wednesday night after 22-year-old Bharti Shahani succumbed to injuries she sustained that night, according to the family’s lawyer James Lassiter. The computer science senior out of Texas A&M was attending the concert with her sister and cousin, who survived the stampede.

Lassiter said Shahani died from “horrific injuries,” and delivered a news conference with Shahani’s family present.

“We want to make sure that the people who decided to put profits over the safety of the lives of children are held responsible,” said Lassiter.

Travis Scott, who was performing during the fatal stampede, has offered to pay for funeral services and mental health counseling. Scott’s attorneys have been criticizing Houston police, saying they should stop “fingerpointing so that together we can identify exactly what transpired and how we can prevent anything like this from happening again.”

At least 50 lawsuits have been filed against Live Nation Entertainment Inc. and Scott for the deaths and injuries sustained at the festival.
