Zach Galifianakis has a big heart in helping others. In fact, Monday night at the Hangover III premiere, he arrived with a special date. This guest was not another celebrity, but his formerly homeless friend, 87 year old Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist.
Haist and Galifianakis have been friends since 1994, when he was beginning to launch his comedy career in L.A. They met while she was volunteering at Fox Coin Laundry in Santa Monica, surviving off tips from customers. The two have stayed in touch over the years. Two years ago, Galifianakis even bought her a one-bedroom apartment and pays for her rent.
Galifianakis has also involved the help of his actress friend, Renee Zelweger. She helps stock Elizabeth’s closet, refrigerator and buys her furniture for her apartment.
Alan Garner would be proud.
