This weekend’s box office results found “The Croods” in the number one spot with $44.7 million, beating “Olympus Has Fallen” which earned $30.5 million. In third place is “Oz the Great and Powerful” at $22 million in its third week in theaters. Fourth place at the box office went to Halle Berry’s “The Call,” with $30.9 million in its second week – “Admission,” the Tina Fey/Paul Rudd comedy opened with only $6.45 million putting it in fifth place.
Since its limited release on the first of the month, Chan-wook Park’s first English language film “Stoker” has not made it in any of the top box office standings. Not only is the film a top notch thriller in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock’s best, it also is a special landmark in a master filmmaker’s career. Starring Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, and Nicole Kidman – “Stoker” is a must see film that will most likely stand the test of time in its genre.
The basic plot line finds India Stoker (Wasikowska) mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney) and the events that occur with in the household that also consists of her mother (Kidman) and her visiting uncle (Goode). Without having previously known about her father’s brother’s existence, she begins to feel a strange infatuation with his charming yet unsettling presence. What occurs from there are plenty of twists and turns with an interestingly original visual style.
