Having donned the red, white, and blue as Captain America, Chris Evans turns his attention away from being an Avenger to being a guardian in Gifted, an upcoming release by Fox Searchlight. The studio unveiled a new advertisement in which Evans is in a custody battle over his niece, who just happens to be a child prodigy. Like a cross between Kramer vs. Kramer and Good Will Hunting, the drama pits father against grandmother in deciding what’s best for young Mary (Mckenna Grace).
Marc Webb, who made a splash with 2007’s (500) Days of Summer before making The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, comes back down to earth from web-slinging superheroes to a small, human drama with a strong ensemble. Joining Chris Evans and newcomer Mckenna Grace are Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate (Obvious Child), Octavia Spencer (The Help).
Gifted will open in theaters on April 12, 2017.
Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.
