Tom Holland continues to ride the wave of his ever-rising action star status. Even during his press tour for the upcoming video game adaptation of Uncharted, he is still reaping the benefits of his most recent film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Holland was initially skeptical when BackstageOL’s Dave Morales broke the news to him that No Way Home is on pace to become the biggest movie of all time.
“I think we’re a bit a ways away from the biggest movie of all time, right?”
Holland is correct. Star Wars: The Force Awakens reigns supreme in that regard with a whopping $936m domestic gross. No Way Home sits $200m short of that mark, however, it is on course to overtake James Cameron’s Avatar for third-highest domestically at the U.S. box office. It is the highest-grossing MCU film after Avengers: Endgame.
The Spider-Man star reels from learning of No Way Home‘s success, struggling to find words before giving credit to his director Jon Watts.
“I think what Jon Watts has done so well with these movies is when we’re making them they feel small, they feel so heartfelt and they feel like we’re making these really intricate, independent movies,” said Holland. “And when they come out you’re always pleasantly surprised that they are not small in any way shape or form.”
Spider-Man is a beloved character with a lot of clout in pop culture. It is a character that has seen enough film adaptations, comic book runs, animated shows, memes and memorabilia to support a small country. The amount of Spider-Man apparel that could be seen during the initial release of No Way Home is similar to a sporting event with fans wearing the jersey of their favorite player.
Holland is well aware of Spider-Man’s power and takes pride in bringing audiences together.
“We have had people from all different walks of life come together and sit in the same theater and watch the same movie and feel the same emotions. It honestly feels amazing to be a part of that.”
Uncharted is a film adaptation of the video game franchise under the same name. Holland stars as lead character Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter seeking a lost fortune of Portugese explorer Ferdinand Magellan while also searching for clues as to the whereabouts of his long-lost brother. The film is set to be released in theaters only on Feb. 18.
