‘The Sword In The Stone’ Is Getting A Live-Action Disney Remake

Another day, another remake – Disney has just revealed that a live-action version of their 1963 animated fantasy The Sword in the Stone is in development.

Writer/producer on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Bryan Cogman, is on board to pen the script for the project, with Brigham Taylor as producer.

The Sword in the Stone, which centers around a young boy (Arthur) who becomes king with the help from a wizard (Merlin), was the final movie to be released before the death of Walt Disney. The feature was based lightly on T.H. White’s novel of the same name, which later became part of the author’s multi-book King Arthur fantasy, The Once and Future King.

Cogman posted an image of himself on Twitter attempting to remove “the sword in the stone” at Disneyland with the caption, “Research.”

With Disney’s previous live-action successes, Alice in Wonderland (2010), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Oz: The Great and Powerful (2013), Maleficent (2014) and the most recent Cinderella (2015) there is a huge market for more of these re-imagined Disney classics.

The studio is currently developing a plethora of live-action films; they include director Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast (starring Emma Watson), director Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book (starring Scarlett Johnasson, Lupita Nyong’o and Bill Murray), Pinocchio, Mulan, Tim Burton’s Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, Tinkerbell (starring Reese Witherspoon), Fantasia and an Aladdin prequel.
