After being released digitally on Christmas Eve, The Interview has already made $15 million in revenue and has been downloaded over 2 million times as of December 27, making it Sony’s most downloaded film ever.
The comedy film, which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as journalists who are a part of a plot to assassinate North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un, was initially pulled from being released after major theater chains refused to screen it in response to recent threats made by a hacker group called the Guardians of Peace. The group had leaked Sony’s confidential information and threatened attacks against moviegoers if the film was released. Sony later decided to make the film available online for rent and purchase through YouTube, Google Play, Microsoft’s Xbox Video, and Sony’s own site www.SeeTheInterview.com. It was also released on Apple’s iTunes over the weekend.
The Interview additionally earned $2.8 million from its limited release in 331 independent movie theaters.
The comedy has also become a hit among pirated films. Torrent Freak reports that The Interview has been illegally downloaded over 1.5 million times.
