The Fault In Our Stars has already broken a Fandango record before even hitting theaters. The romantic drama has sold the largest number of advance tickets sales in the company’s 14-year history.
The film is currently outpacing The Vow, Safe Haven, and Dear John. The previous record-holder was 2012’s The Vow, featuring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, which opened with $41.2 million on Valentine’s Day weekend.
Fandango did not include the popular Twilight franchise in the ranking, as those films are not in the “romantic drama” category but rather “fantasy romance.”
Adapted from John Green’s hit novel, costars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort play the role of the teens that meet at a cancer support group and fall in love.
Shailene Woodley is suspected to be a prime reason for the increased advance ticket sales. A Fandango survey of more than 1,000 consumers buying tickets illustrated that 81 percent said they have read the book, and that nearly 65 percent picked Woodley as a motivating factor in buying a ticket.
“What’s so unique about Shailene is how unaffected she is,” Fandango chief correspondent Dave Karger told TheWrap. “There’s nothing pre-packaged or rehearsed about her. That makes her not only an excellent naturalistic actress, but it also creates an aura of relatability for her growing legions of mostly young female fans.”
The Fault In Our Stars, or TFIOS for short, opens this weekend on Friday, June 6th and is expected to be a box-office hit. There are predictions that the film will debut with $30 million domestically, according to pre-release tracking.
TFIOS will be met with tough competition, however, as Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s action film Edge of Tomorrow will be released on Friday as well. Not to mention Disney’s Maleficent, which debuted with a $70 million North American opening last weekend and currently holds the top spot at the box office.
