‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Breaks $1 Billion Milestone

The final film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise, The Dark Knight Rises, has become the eleventh film in history to break the $1 billion milestone.

Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures announced on Sunday that the film has grossed $431.4 million in domestic sales and over $574 million overseas. With total box office sales exceeding $1.005 billion, The Dark Knight Rises has surpassed The Dark Knight‘s worldwide total of $1.0003 billion (2008 dollars) as the most popular film of the franchise.

Although The Dark Knight Rises has broken the billion dollar mark, it is not this year’s highest grossing film. Disney/Marvel Studio’s The Avengers brought in over $1.5 billion a the box office and is now the third highest grossing film of all time behind 2009’s Avatar and 1997’s Titanic.

The Dark Knight Rises is currently on track to become one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time.
