‘The Big Sick’ Trailer: This Summer’s Sleeper Hit?

Summers have grown to be the season of blockbusters and tentpole releases. From the start of May to the end of August, studios push a majority of its biggest releases of the year. In the month of May 2017 alone we get Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Alien: Covenant, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. But then there are those hits that seem to come out of nowhere. Last year it was the comedy Bad Moms ($113M). For 2013 it was supernatural horror as The Conjuring grossed $137M in the U.S.

Now, I’m not saying that Amazon Studios’ The Big Sick will be that come-out-of-nowhere hit this summer, but it will definitely be nice counterprogramming to the cacophony that we usually equate to summertime movies.

The studio has unveiled the trailer to the Michael Showalter (Hello My Name Is Doris) comedy that won the “Festival Favorites” audience award as part of the 2017 South By Southwest Film Festival.

The comedy is based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, and tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan) after one of his standup sets. That one-night stand blossoms into a romance, which complicates the life his Muslim parents expect Kumail to lead. When Emily is stricken with a mysterious illness, it sees Kumail meet her parents (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) for the first time. If this wasn’t complicated enough, Kumail struggles with Emily’s medical condition while his family persists in finding him a more suitable fiance.
