‘Star Trek’ Overcomes ‘Iron Man’ in Weekend Box Office

J.J. Abrams scored big over the weekend with his latest addition to the Star Trek franchise.  Star Trek Into The Darkness earned $84.1 million from Trekies and newcomers alike who fled to theaters across the nation.

Due to the success of Star Trek, Iron Man 3 was pushed into second place, earning $35.2 million over the weekend.  So far the film has earned $337 million in North America in just three weeks.

The Great Gatsby is still doing fairly well in third place, earning $23.4 million and grossing $90.2 million so far in North America.  Due to the success at the worldwide box office, Gatsby has already recouped its $105 million budget, earning an additional $42.1 million overseas.

The Croods are still going strong after nine weeks.  The film has earned a total $177 million and took fifth place at this weekend’s box office.  Oblivion has fallen to 8th place, under Palme d’Or nominee Mud starring Matthew McConaughey, which has slowly began to rise up the list.
