Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will direct Disney’s upcoming film Star Wars: Episode VII according to Deadline.com. Yes, you heard that right. J.J. Abram is now becoming the master of everything Star Trek and Star Wars.
The seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise is currently being written by Toy Story 3 screenwriter Michael Arndt. Arndt won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film Little Miss Sunshine.
Last December Abrams stated that he was approached by Lucasfilm to direct the seventh Star Wars film but decline the job due to his loyalty to the Star Trek franchise.
“[Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers,” Abrams previously reported. “It’s in great hands. There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to ‘Star Trek,’ and also just being a fan, I wouldn’t even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I’d rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming.”
Now it seems like Abrams has had a change of heart. The Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol director is currently working on his May release of Star Trek Into Darkness. Afterwards he’ll be jumping off the U.S.S. Enterprise and be heading straight to the Millennium Falcon.
Star Wars: Episode VII is due in theaters in 2015.
