Sony Pictures has confirmed that the Spider-Man franchise is currently developing their very own female-led superhero movie for 2017.
According to Deadline, screenwriter Lisa Joy Nolan has been hired to pen a script, along with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing. It has not been revealed quite yet on which female character the film will center on, but Black Cat, Silver Sable and Spider-Woman are a few possibilities.
This year’s Amazing Spider-Man 2, featuring Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, didn’t debut as well as the original at the box office. Just last month, co-writer Roberto Orci announced that he would no longer be involved with the franchise.
With Amazing Spider-Man 3 being pushed to 2018, director Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six, which focuses on a few of mankind’s greatest enemies trying to destroy Spider-Man/Peter Parker, has been scheduled to hit theaters November 11, 2016.
Female-driven superhero movies are becoming more common in Hollywood, with Marvel recently announcing a female Thor, Wonder Woman joining the Batman v Superman cast, and Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy defeating Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules at the box office.
