Sony Developing Female-Led ‘21 Jump Street’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is planning a female-driven spin-off of the popular 21 Jump Street franchise, just shortly after announcing the female-centric Ghostbusters reboot.

The studio is hoping to broaden the franchise base, with Comedy Central’s Broad City writers Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs reportedly on board to write the screenplay.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller both helmed the R-rated Jump Street series, with the initial 21 Jump Street grossing over $200 million worldwide, and its successor, 22 Jump Street, taking in $331 million worldwide.

The franchise, based on the Fox series (1987-1991) that starred Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise as undercover cops, is currently working on the third installment, 23 Jump Street. The film will reunite dream team Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, with Rodney Rothman set as the screenwriter.

The other recently announced project includes the action-comedy crossover with the Men In Black franchise. Last year, in the infamous Sony e-mail leaks, Hill called the idea “clean and rad and powerful.”

Lord and Miller told MTV News, earlier this year, that it was an idea they were definitely interested in.

“Nothing’s changed. It’s still a crazy idea, and we only do things that seem like they’re going to be terrible,” Lord said. “We’re really focusing on what’s a great story for Schmidt and Jenko and how to tell the next chapter in their lives. And perhaps use creatures from another world at the same time.”

Meanwhile, the Ghostbusters reboot is expected to shoot this summer, with Paul Feig as director and Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Cecily Strong, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon as the leading ladies of the film. The comedy is slated to debut next year.
