Sigourney Weaver Returning To ‘Avatar’ Sequels As New Character
Previously announced cast returnees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang are not the only ones making their way back to the 2009 sci-fi blockbuster.
Sigourney Weaver has signed on to return to director James Cameron’s three Avatar sequels. They are scheduled to begin production later this year.
Though Weaver’s character was killed in the mega-hit film, it doesn’t mean she can’t return as a completely new character.
“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels,” said Cameron.
“Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration,” he continued.
The untitled sequels will be filmed back-to-back, with the first hitting cinemas in December 2016, and the final two films debuting in 2017 and 2018.
Avatar was released five years ago and it still remains as the top-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office. The sci-fi action film earned $2.8 billion since its 2009 release.
