Has Ryan Reynolds lost his charm? This week the 36-year-old actor released two +$130 million budget films in theaters across the country: the animated film Turbo and the supernatural action film R.I.P.D.
Disappointingly, both films are turning into box office bombs.
The Ryan Reynolds-voiced Turbo, the story of an ordinary garden snail whose dreams to become the fastest snail in the world, earned a meager $31 million since the film’s Wednesday release. Over $21 million of the earnings were over the weekend, giving the film a third place finish in its debut week. The budget for the film was an estimated $135 million before promotional costs. Due to its failure at the box office, it is now being considered one of the weakest openings in DreamWorks Animation’s history.
Meanwhile, supernatural action film R.I.P.D. earned a pathetic $12.7 million at the box office. The film stars Jeff Daniels and Ryan Reynolds as two dead cops who return from the afterlife to retrieve runaway souls who are stuck on earth. What seemed like a wanna-be Men In Black turned into an utter failure, getting destroyed by critics and earning a “Rotten” rating of 11% on RottenTomatoes.com. Again, the film cost $130 million to produce (before promo costs) and will never recoup its production cost. Well, unless the film stages the biggest box office comeback in cinematic history. Not likely!
So who’s to blame for the box office failure? Is it Ryan Reynolds (who stars in both films) or is it Hollywood’s ( because they are spending WAY too much money to produce movie)?
