Russell Crowe will make his directorial debut and star in the WWI-era drama The Water Diviner. The film is set in 1919 and will follow an Australian father, played by native Russell Crowe, who travels to Turkey in order to find his two sons who went missing during the battle of Gallipoli during World War I.
The Battle of Gallipoli (1914-1918) was an unsuccessful attempt by the Allied Powers to control the sea route from Europe to Russia on the Gallipoli Peninsula of Turkey.
According to Deadline, Crowe has long planned for his directorial debut and considered many projects including Australian stories The Long Green Shore and Bra Boys. Crowe just recently appeared in the Superman reboot Man of Steel .
The screenplay for The Water Diviner was written by Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastasios, along with Troy Lum, Andrew Mason and Keith Rodger producing.
Production is scheduled to begin later this year in both Australia and Turkey.
