TV director Rob Schrab will be making his feature directorial debut on Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie Sequel.
The follow-up to last year’s The LEGO Movie was written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The two are set to write the new feature and will also serve as producers, alongside returning producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee. The original film broke February records when it debuted with $69 million domestically, and received roughly $470 million since its February 2014 release.
The Lego Movie Sequel is the fourth film in the franchise for Warner Bros., which has spinoff Ninjago set for a September 23rd, 2016 release, and the untitled Batman LEGO feature for May 2017.
In the press release, Lord and Miller said in a joint statement, “We are so excited to collaborate with Rob. He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor, bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, ‘Of course!’”
Schrab has directed episodes on Community, The Mindy Project and Parks and Recreation, as well as directing and executively producing The Sarah Silverman Program, for which he received a WGA Award nomination.
“The LEGO Movie captivated critics and audiences on a global scale with its irresistible blend of humor, imagination and fun,” said Warner Bros president of Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman in the release announcing the deal. “Warner Bros. is excited to build our relationship with The LEGO Group with this new adventure, and we join them in welcoming the multi-talented Rob Schrab to the LEGO family as he takes the helm of The LEGO Movie Sequel.”
Plot details, as well as an expected release date remain unknown at this time.
