The Batmanfeatures plenty of new faces in familiar character roles, but all of that is for naught if the villain isn’t compelling. For the movie to work, Paul Dano started a process of reinventing The Riddler character in The Batman.
The Riddler In Media
The Riddler character has been portrayed in various styles over the years. From comics and video games to shows and movies. Each one is unique and covers a different aspect of what makes the Batman villain so interesting.
Reinventing The Riddler
In The Batman, the story in and around Gotham City is grounded in a sense of reality. The bright green and purple colors that clothe The Riddler are gone. He’s now bathed in a muted, dark green. His maniacal laugh after reciting a riddle is gone. There is an unnerving and labored breath following his peril.
Together Matt Reeves and Paul Dano used the Se7en and Zodiac films as a foundation to craft a misguided and terrifying individual.
