UPDATE: Shane Black’s ‘Predator’ Is More Sequel Than Reboot

UPDATE: It was previously reported that the alien classic film was going to get a reboot, however, Collider reached out to director Shane Black to find out more.

“As far as Fred (Dekker) and I are concerned anyway, why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?” Black continued saying that he doesn’t like reboots generally, but can “really get behind inventive sequels”, noting that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing ‘Predator’ mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

20th Century Fox is rebooting the 80’s action classic, Predator, which featured a team of commandos – Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura – being hunted by an alien in the jungle.

The Hollywood Reporter first informed that Iron Man 3 director Shane Black and Fred Dekker, who have previously worked together on 1987’s Monster Squad, are set to write the script for the remake.

The original Predator was directed by John McTiernan, in which Black had a minor role. John Davis was the producer with Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon, and will be producing the upcoming project.

When it was released in 1987, the sci-fi action film raked in around $100 million in worldwide. Following the blockbuster, 1990’s Predator 2, starring Danny Glover, earned $57 million and 2010’s Predators, starring Adrien Brody and Topher Grace, took in $127 million. Fox combined franchises with two Alien vs. Predator movies in 2004 and 2007, as well.

Other than Iron Man 3 and Monster Squad, Black’s writing recognitions include Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which he too directed. He is currently trying to put together a cast for a reboot of The Nice Guys and Doc Savage for Sony.

No dates around the new project were released. In the meantime, watch the 1987 Predator trailer below:
