The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced that 289 films are eligible for the 2013 Academy Awards.
In order for feature films to qualify, they must debut in a motion picture theater in Los Angeles by midnight on Dec. 31st and be shown for at least seven consecutive days. Any films that were first distributed to the public in a different manner than a theatrical release can not be nominated for an Oscar.
In addition, the Academy rules state that the film must be longer than 40 minutes and be shown on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.
The amount of films eligible this year is an increase from last year when 282 films qualified. Among the films that are eligible to be nominated for Best Picture are “Gravity,” “American Hustle,” “World War Z,” and even the One Direction documentary “This is Us.”
