The 2002 hit romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding will be getting a sequel. Stars and producers from the original film will be reuniting once more.
The first film, based on actress Nia Vardalos’ experiences growing up, was about a first generation Greek-American woman (Vardalos) who falls in love with a non-Greek high school English teacher (John Corbett). The comedy went on to become the highest-grossing romantic comedy in history, making $241 million at the domestic box office and $369 at the worldwide box office.
“Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story,” Vardalos said on Twitter. “Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”
The actress recently published the book Instant Mom and is writing to star in Paramount’s Leftovers.
Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are returning as producers with Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, Norm Waitt and Steve Shareshian set to executive produce, along with Nia Vardalos, who wrote the first film and scripted the second installment.
Joel Zwick directed the first movie, however there is currently no director attached to My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. The plot of the anticipated sequel involves the reveal of a family secret and a new wedding (bigger and fatter) that brings the Greek family together again in a different chapter of their lives.
(1 of 2) I’m working on the MBFGWedding sequel; now that I’m experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter.
