Fox 2000 is currently working on a sequel to the 1993 hit film Mrs. Doubtfire, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
David Berenbaum, writer of Elf, is penning the script. Fox 2000 also plans to have Robin Williams reprise his role as the comical housekeeper with Chris Columbus returning to direct.
In the original film, Williams plays an unemployed, recently divorced dad who dresses up as a Scottish woman named Euphegenia Doubtfire in order to become his estranged wife’s housekeeper so he can spend time with his three children. Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan also starred in the film, which was a box office success, making $440 million worldwide. It also won an Oscar for Best Makeup and the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical that year. In addition, Williams picked up a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy for his role.
There had been rumors circulating in the early 2000s that there would be a sequel to the comedy film, but nothing ever came of the project until now.
It is currently unknown if the studio plans to have any of the other actors from the original film besides Williams reprise their roles. However, there is one original cast member who wants nothing to do with the sequel. Mara Wilson, who portrayed Williams’ youngest daughter, expressed her lack of desire to be in the sequel on Twitter, saying:
For the record, no, I do not have anything to do with the Mrs. Doubtfire sequel, nor will I.

Sequels generally suck unless they were planned as part of a trilogy or series. I think Doubtfire ended where it needed to end.

There are many, many reasons I don’t want to be in Mrs. Doubtfire 2. But they haven’t even asked me (yet), so no need to worry.

No plot details about the sequel have been revealed yet.
