‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Musical in the Works

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, composer Alan Menken revealed that he is currently writing music for a Mrs. Doubtfire musical.

Menken has composed music for numerous Disney films, including Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Tangled. More recently, he also wrote the score for ABC’s comedy series Galavant.

David Zippel, who has written lyrics for Disney’s Hercules and Mulan, is writing the lyrics for the show while Harvey Fierstein is writing the book. The playwright has previously written the books for Broadway musicals La Cage aux Folles and Kinky Boots. Fierstein was also in the Mrs. Doubtfire film, portraying Robin Williams’ character’s brother Frank who helps transform him into the housekeeper.

“It’s going very well, it’s in its early stages, and that’s probably all I can say,” Menken told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re really enjoying working on it.”
