‘Lawless’ Opens Up at #1

Lawless is already number one at the box office, opening in theaters nationwide on Wedesday.

Just in time for Labor Day weekend, Lawless debuted  at number one in theaters yesterday making $1.1 million at the box office.  The Prohibition-era film beat The Expandables 2 which had been number one for the past two weeks straight.

“What usually happens for a Wednesday opening is that you can get around 12.5 times that number for the 6 days Wednesday through Monday which would put us at $13.5M,” a Weinstein exec mentioned.

The movie is set in depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, where a bootlegging gang is threatened by a new deputy and other authorities who want a cut of their profits.

The movie is based on the 2008 novel The Wettest County in the World and stars Shia LaBeouf , Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain.
