‘La La Land’ Lands 12 Critics Choice Award Nominations

Nominations for the 2016 Critics Choice Awards have been announced and it was very good news for the Lionsgate/Summit camp as its release La La Land dominated the field, along with the studio’s Hacksaw Ridge and Hell or High Water.

Damien Chazelle’s original musical scored 12 nominations, the most of any film, including nominations for Best Picture, Director, plus stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Since it was largely ignored by the National Board of Review, aside from a special mention as part of its Top 10 Films of the Year, to scoop up a dozen nominations will look mighty nice leading up to its major release bow at Christmas.

Following on the heels of La La Land were A24’s Moonlight and Paramount’s cerebral sci-fi release Arrival with 10 a piece, including nominations for Picture and Director.

The National Board of Review’s Film of the Year, Manchester by the Sea, picked up Picture and Director nods as well as nominations for Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. For those who thought Denzel Washington was magnificent in The Magnificent Seven wait until you see his third directorial effort Fences, which scored nominations for Best Picture, Ensemble and Viola Davis in a Supporting Role, plus Washington himself got recognized in the directing and lead acting categories.

The Critics Choice Awards has categories that go beyond foreign films and documentaries as it recognizes best action films, sci-fi/horror, and comedy. This is where box office heavyweights Doctor Strange, Captain America and Deadpool duke it out, while Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart (Central Intelligence) tangle with The Nice Guys‘ Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.

Missing from the nominations were the films Silence, Passengers, Rogue One and Collateral Beauty.

This year’s Critics Choice Awards will broadcast on A&E on Sunday, December 11, 2016.
