Universal Studios is in talks with writer, producer and director Matthew Vaughn to bring Kick-Ass 2, the sequel to the 2010 cult film based on Mark Millar-John Romita Jr. comic-book miniseries to the studio.
The first film, distributed by Lionsgate, was self-financed, produced and directed by Vaughn. While Vaughn plans to produce the sequel, he has “hand-picked” Never Back Down director Jeff Wadlow to direct the film.
The sequel will be based off the comic book series of the same name, as well as the spin-off book Hit-Girl.
Kick-Ass was released on April 16, 2010 in the United States and had a box office worldwide total of over $96 million on a $28 million budget.
Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all expected to return for Kick-Ass 2.
