Netflix announced Tuesday that 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up director Judd Apatow will be producing Pee-wee’s Big Holiday to premiere exclusively on Netflix in all territories.
Paul Reuben’s will be returning as Pee-wee and co-wrote the film with Arrested Development writer Paul Rust while John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer) will make his feature film directorial debut.
In Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny according to the press release. Apatow and Ruebens began discussing this idea for a Pee-wee Herman film four years ago.
Paul Reubens created the character, Pee-wee Herman, while a member of the famed improv group The Groundlings and has portrayed him successfully on stage, film, including Pee-wee’s Big Adventure which was Tim Burton’s directorial debut, television, where Reubens was nominated for 14 Emmys and won 2, and on Broadway.
Production of Pee-wee’s Big Holiday begins in early 2015. Read the press release here.
