Identity Thief has stolen the box office crown with the biggest opening of 2013. The film was the largest opening weekend for any film of 2013 thus far as well as one of the largest ever for an R-rated comedy.
Identity Thief took in an impression $36.6 million this weekend, easily beating Mama‘s $28.4 million debut. The R-rated comedy knocked out last weekend’s #1 film, the zombie romantic comedy Warm Bodies, to the #2 spot.
Surprising studio analysts, the film made $10 million more than expected. A lower studio projection was calculated due to this weekend’s blizzards that battered the East Coast and was thought to effect moviegoer turn out.
