Oliver Twist will include a combination of musical styles.
Ice Cube, Wicked producer Marc Platt and Hamilton director Thomas Kail are teaming up with Disney Studios to create a contemporary musical take on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist.
Oliver Twist – Dickens’ second and most famous novel – tells the story of an orphan boy who starts his life in a workhouse, is sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker, and later escapes to join a gang of juvenile pickpockets.
The tale has been adapted many times into stage plays and films, including the 1968 movie musical Oliver! and 1988’s animated film Oliver and Company.

Platt, Jeff Kwatinetz (The Firm) and Cube (Cube Vision) are all on board to produce. Cube is also attached to play Fagin, the elderly leader of the pickpockets, in the present-day musical – which is said to cross “many genres, including hip-hop.”
The former co-founder of seminal rap group N.W.A turned actor and producer most recently produced Straight Outta Compton and Ride Along 2.
Kail (Grease Live!) is in negotiations to direct.
