Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed to IGN that he is currently writing a sequel to Pacific Rim. Guillermo broke the news while promoting the Blu-ray DVD release of Pacific Rim. Although the green light has not been given by the studio, Del Toro and Travis Beacham are staying optimistic and are writing a sequel for the successful summer sci-fi blockbuster.
“We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate,” Guillermo told IGN.
Pacific Rim raked in $400 million in box office sales worldwide and was this year’s highest-grossing live-action movie that was not a sequel or adaption of another film. Although the film was not as successful as the studio would’ve liked in North America, Pacific Rim was still very successful overseas.
“To me, what was beautiful and flattering was how people saw the movie not once or twice but three, four times or more,” Del Toro said. “People that love it, love it with great passion. So I would love to continue telling stories about that world.”
A name or plot for the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel has yet to be released.
