Golden Globes 2016: And the Winners Are…
The 2016 awards season kicked off tonight with the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards to honor the best in film and television. Ricky Gervais returned to host the awards show for the first time since 2012 and dished out insults about the awards show itself and various celebrities, including Caitlyn Jenner, Ben Affleck, and Sean Penn, throughout the night.
The night was full of surprises. Rachel Bloom, star of the CW’s musical-comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, won the award for Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy, beating out Juilia Louis-Dreyfus, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Lily Tomlin. Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle took home the award for Best TV Series – Comedy over last year’s winner Transparent, Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, Hulu’s Casual, and HBO’s Veep and Silicon Valley. The film Carol received the most nominations, but did not take home any awards.
Tom Hanks presented his Philadelphia co-star Denzel Washington with the honorary Cecil B. DeMille award. Washington brought his wife and children onstage to accept it and delivered an unprepared speech.
The big winner of the night was The Revenant, which received three Golden Globes. Leonardo won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for the film, Alejandro G. Iñárritu won Best Director – Motion Picture, and the film was awarded Best Motion Picture – Drama.
