Legenday Pictures and Warner Bros.’ Godzilla trampled the competition this weekend as the movie opened in the top spot at the weekend box office. The mega-monster movie opened with $93.2M, falling behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier who still holds the highest opening weekend of 2014. Godzilla made a record-breaking highest opening debut day of 2014 with $38.5M on Friday. The giant lizard earned an additional $6.2M in IMAX alone, which is the highest so far this year.
Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Ken Watanabe.
Director Gareth Edwards has hinted at a sequel in the past, but has kept any further details to himself. It is now confirmed that after the success of the recreation, plans for a sequel are in the works. However no release date or set actors have been announced yet. It seems from the film though that the Brody family (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his wife and son) will return for the sequel since the first film was so heavily plotted around them.
