While most of the country was freezing from a wintry storm that swept over the nation, it didn’t stop movie goers from flocking to theaters to watch Disney’s Frozen. Featuring the voice talents of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, the animated film earned $31.6 million at the box office.
Although Frozen sales fell 53% since last weekend, the film’s take was still enough to become the highest post-Thanksgiving gross ever. For comparison, in 1999 Toy Story 2 earned $27.8 million during the same weekend while 2010’s Tangled brought home $21.6 million.
Previously at number one was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The Lionsgate blockbuster had reigned king of the box office until it fell into second place this week with $27 million. The film is not performing up to the standards as the last two films from the Twilight franchise did after Thanksgiving, but The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is still expected to earn over $400 million in North America.
The only new film to open in theaters this weekend was Scott Coopers’ Out of the Furnace starring an ensemble cast of Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker and Willem Dafoe. Furnace‘s star-studded lineup was no help at the box office though, because the film earned only $5.3 million in 2,101 locations. The opening is one of the biggest disappointments of the year.
