First Look: Tom Cruise In ‘The Mummy’

“Welcome to a new world of gods and monsters.”

The Mummy is back. Only this time there’s no Brendan Fraser or Rachel Weisz to be found. Instead, Universal’s reboot stars Tom Cruise playing, well, I’m not exactly sure. He could be playing an archaeologist or perhaps he just finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nevertheless, he appears in full-on Mission: Impossible mode, continuing to push the limits of action stardom. This time it is doing some crazy yelling as a cargo plane prepares to crash land. It’s a sequence that looks partly inspired by Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, minus the sarcophagus, of course.

And we get a little sneak peek of Tom Cruise running through London (because I believe it’s mandated Cruise run either towards or away from something in every movie he’s in).

Russell Crowe intones the quote above and somberly explains that a bunch of bad stuff is about to happen. Oh, Russell. Are you not entertained?

The Mummy looks to be the first of what Universal hopes creates a Monsters Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by Alex Kurtzman, who previously wrote and directed People Like Us (and has developed numerous TV properties like Fringe and Hawaii 5-0). Christopher McQuarrie shares scriptwriting duties with Jon Spaiths (Prometheus). Besides Cruise and Crowe, The Mummy also features Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance.

The Mummy will be unleashed onto the world stage on June 9, 2017.
