The first trailer for Jean-Marc Vallée’s biopic Dallas Buyers Club, starring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, has been released.
The film is inspired by the real-life story of Rod Woodroff, played by McConaughey, who was a Texan electrician. He was blindsided when he was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1986 and given 30 days to live. Woodroff began to look for a way to outlive this disease and started smuggling alternative, illegal drugs into America to help himself and other AIDS patients.
Jared Leto plays Rayon, a trans-sexual woman with HIV, who helps Woodroff (McConaughey). This is Leto’s first role since 2009’s Mr. Nobody. Jennifer Garner also stars as Dr. Eve Saks.
The film was already receiving heavy pre-Oscar buzz even before the trailer was released due to the stars’ commitment of losing so much weight to portray their characters. McConaughey is barely recognizable, he lost nearly 50 pounds to really fit the part.
Focus Features has moved the film’s release from Dec. 6 to Nov. 1, giving the film a longer lead-up to the holiday season, as stated by Variety.
