First Look: Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

A first look at Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role of Marvel’s upcoming film Doctor Strange was finally revealed through Entertainment Weekly today.

The photoshoot was one of the first few times Cumberbatch tried on the costume.  “It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically,” Cumberbatch said in the interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”

The film, which centers around neurosurgeon-turned-sorcerer Doctor Stephen Strange, will also star Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Swinton will take on the role of the Ancient One, who serves as a mentor to Doctor Strange. McAdams’ and Mikkelsen’s roles in the film were also partially revealed Monday. Mikkelsen will play the main villain in the film, but his character’s name is still being kept under wraps.

“Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly. “[He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.”

As for McAdams, her character’s name also remains a mystery. However, Feige did reveal that she “plays a fellow surgeon that has a history with Strange and is his sort of lynchpin to his old life, once he steps into the role of a sorcerer.”

Production for Doctor Strange just began in November, and filming is expected to conclude in March. The film is slated to hit theaters November 4, 2016.
