A week before Guardians of the Galaxy even hit theaters, Marvel announced at San Diego Comic-Con that there would be a sequel. Now, the film’s tremendous opening at the box office and stellar reviews verify the need for a follow-up film, and here’s what we know about it so far (Warning: some possible spoilers ahead if you haven’t already seen Guardians of the Galaxy).
James Gunn will be returning to write and direct the film, and he already has begun working on it. He took to Facebook to write a note of thanks to the fans and filmmakers, adding that he “spent this weekend hard at work on the sequel.”
In a Twitter Q&A with Gunn sponsored by E!Online, Gunn revealed there will be “at least one more” Guardian from the comics.
.@eonline @afeeqdannoDNA I love so many – can’t give it away but there should be at least one more Guardian from the comics.

In recent volumes, the Guardians of the Galaxy comics have featured Iron Man, Captain America, and Agent Venom alongside Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. Other possible characters include superheroes who have not appeared on the big screen yet, such as Phyla Vell, Nova, and Adam Warlock.
In an interview with FilmDivider, Gunn spoke of what fans can expect to see from the characters seen in the first film. “I have a lot of ideas for stories and characters that are going to appear, and there are documents written up, that some people have, about Peter Quill’s father and his relationship, a lot of stuff about Yondu, and a lot of stuff about Drax that nobody knows.”
Gunn stated that he is also interested in exploring more of the Xandarian and Kree culture, as well as the Krylorians and Ravagers. “[Marvel President Kevin Feige] knows all the stuff, and if I died tomorrow they could go make a movie,” he added. “They could write the story of Peter Quill’s father and it would all be there. I think Yondu is a very important character, a really important character in this universe, and I think Nebula is really important too and so I think we’ll see more of both of those characters.”
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will arrive in theaters July 28, 2017.
